The original GreenWave was created by Glenn Hallam, Paul Seymour, Rocky Kimball, Libba and Gifford Pinchot, and Brad Peirce … to bring together like-minded people who are in positions of influence – leaders who care about the environment and want to make a difference.

Origins

Glenn Hallam, Ph.D.

Like most of us, I grew up with the automobile. My first car was a 1965 Mustang that I drove around Southern California, before the catalytic converter, when the L.A. basin filled with smog like a bowl of brown soup.

But throughout the 60s and 70s, our family spent the summers up in the mountains, at 7,000 feet altitude, where I fell in love with the lush green meadows and bright blue waters of Big Bear Lake.

Shaped by this experience — ascending to the fresh air and starry nights of the mountains, and then descending into the pollution and congested freeways of Los Angeles — I have been drawn to clean air and natural beauty throughout my life: the coastal mountains above Palo Alto, peaceful lakes of Minnesota, snow-capped peaks of Colorado, turquoise waters of Florida and now the cool beach of California. For three decades, I have managed to avoid driving to work by working virtually or cycling, even in the Minnesota winter, when I peddled to work through fresh snow, with studded tires and ski gloves, breathing single-digit air along the banks of the frozen Mississippi.

In my work with leaders of Fortune 100 companies, I have done some of my best thinking from the seat of a bicycle, riding along the Coast of California, or in hiking boots, headed up Pikes Peak, or on the bow of a boat, watching the sun go down on the Gulf of Mexico. I have been drawn to the outdoors.

Now I am called to help leaders make measurable progress in their environmental initiatives. It’s time for us to put our heads together and use our influence, energy and talent to make a real difference for the planet.
