LEADER ACTIONS

Some thoughts to start the conversation

  1. Ask experienced people how the organization works … who makes decisions, how decisions are made, etc. Advance your knowledge of the overall system.

  2. Watch how other savvy people influence or drive change in this organization; how do they engage the organizational chain of command?

  3. Try to see the organization through the eyes of other key players.

  4. Explore the competing priorities in the organization. What are the primary tensions?

  5. Identify organizational /political boundaries and their implications.

  6. Learn to time initiatives appropriately; know when to wait and when to press ahead.

  7. Be diplomatic in negotiating; making points clearly and persuasively.

  8. Choose battles wisely so energy goes where it counts.

  9. Seek guidance about who to turn to for support or advice.

  10. Build confidence with small, successful demonstrations.
